Can I use an external hard drive to complete the upgrade? I have a laptop with a tiny memory and plug in an external hard drive with plenty of memory but it doesn’t give me the option to use this as the memory source for the upgrade.

By memory you are referring to hard drive space? What is the size of the system drive in gigabytes? An option would be to move installed programs to the external drive. For win10 apps-programs it is best to leave them on the system drive.
The other option is to download win10 iso and create bootable media on a usb thumb drive, rufus can do this, it is free and can create both legacy and uefi bootable media.
I found that it is best to use rufus to create the media only for the type of bios on the system as both may not work on some uefi bios if a hybrid bios is on the system. How satisfied are you with this reply?

My laptop has like 2gb free, but I cannot move anything else on to the external drive because it is just the laptop system stuff that is taking up the space not anything I have downloaded or saved.
I am sure using the external hard drive for updates has worked in the past. In reply to Hazel90’s post on July 13, Check for system restore settings, it may have a large amount of space allocated to it.
The other issue could be the page file, depends on how much ram is installed as windows will use about 3x the amount of physical installed ram. Also on laptops some physical ram is allocated-set aside for the gpu’s in the system. My amd cpu, a m has a radeon g gpu, it has mb of system ram to run it but it can take up to 3 gig of physical ram depending on what program is running. So if windows needs to free up the physical ram, it dumps programs to the system drive, that is part of the page file and hard drive space taken away.
Is this an ssd or sshd drive? Are you trying to update a win10 build or only recent updates? This site in other languages x.
