Can you help us improve? Complaint: If Windows Update can determine that the device isn’t ready, why can’t it inform the user as to the reason it’s not ready? Maybe it’s something I can resolve. Question: Is there some log somewhere that I’ve overlooked that will reveal the specific reason?

I had this on a couple of older laptops and one new one experience this and as stated it is most likely a firmware or driver update still pending from the manufacturer of the device.
What worked for me was going direct to Intel support assistant and upgrading the drivers for Motherboard Chipset and Firmware for the SSD drive and then I was able to upgrade.

As I mentioned in the original post, I looked at the list of issues, but they’re not necessarily applicable to the devices in question. Sometimes it’s fun to play whack a mole and tackle the most likely problem, and then the next most likely problem, and so on, until the issue is resolved.
Other times, it’s not. With one device, I resolved the only applicable issue and disconnected all USB drives and readers, rebooted, checked for updates and got the same message. I waited for a few hours and tried again, just in case the changes took a while to process. No luck, time wasted. The reason behind my complaint and question is the same.

Unless Microsoft has decided to go super generic with error messages, the updates aren’t failing, they aren’t starting, because the devices aren’t ready. The message implies the answer is known. If the answer were not known, how would it be possible to update the message when the device is ready? It creates a log folder with log files.

I downloaded upgrades, then clicked on the fine print below ‘not ready to upgrade ‘ I used a tool which told me that it was fine to download and downloaded it. I failed the first time but only found out when I came home, as I left the computer installing. It said something about removing hardware. I only removed the USB stick and then it downloaded the programme. Takes time but works well.
I only have an occasional problem where my computer does not seem to wake from sleep. I have played with it and it’s mostly ok, although last night I left the computer on and went away and when I came back, again I could not wake it up. I played with it again today, so hopefully it’s fine.
That’s it. Any chance you could put in a temporary hard drive and try to do a clean install of ? If it fails, it might get you more details on why. But your point is spot on–if the installer knows why it failed, it should just report that. I’ve run into a couple systems that don’t play nicely with updates.
