This book is not for beginners. If all you want to do is take vacation snapshots and pictures of the kids and pets to upload to Facebook, this book is gross overkill. You need to have a good camera, capable of saving the images in RAW format, rather than in camera-processed JPEG format, and know how to use it. You should already have some experience in using Photoshop Elements, preferably with the help of an elementary guide, so that you are aware of the many tools it offers, and how to use them.
You must have Photoshop Elements 9, since the capabilities and menu interface will be different from earlier versions. Photo editing is computation intensive, so you must have a reasonably fast computer with at least 1 Gig of RAM if you don’t want to spend the evening watching the little hourglass pointer.
The very first chapter in the book gives a brief but complete description of the RAW editor tools of PE9. I updated PE9 on the Adobe Web site and that solved the problem. This provides greater leeway in adjusting colors and brightness of your images. It also allows greater sharpening of the images without introducing artifacts.
This chapter of the book was an eye-opener for me and all by itself justified its purchase After pre-processing the images in RAW format you transfer them to the Photoshop Editor for further fine-tuning. Most of the editing tools then are restricted to images with 8-bit color depth.
I have only studied a few more of the early chapters of the book thus far. Using example images, the authors use tools in Photoshop you would never discover on your own, They use the full sophistication of the Photoshop program. If you want to become fully familiar with their use it is not enough to just see them demonstrated, but you have to open up some photos of your own and practice using the tools. Many of the editing tools have a list of possible options, and it is worthwhile to try them out and broaden your understanding.
You can’t learn without doing your homework! The authors also made movies showing the procedures as they actually are performed on the computer. I have found them very useful when I got stuck following an example and somehow had overlooked a detail that bogged me down. My only significant beef with the book is that the necessary supporting image files and movies are not included on a DVD but must be downloaded from the author’s web site in Australia.
The downloads are agonizingly slow, up to KBps at best. I tried different times of day without success. I downloaded them finally in the background while doing other things.
I estimate that the total download time was of the order of 6 hours. I expect that it will take most of the winter hours to finish the book. I’ll consider it a worthwhile experience! In fact he knows so much you may think he’s talking about another piece of software if you’re used to the usual Elements ‘How to’ books.
My only grumble, and the reason for the missing 5th star, is that like a lot of really clever people he is no teacher. Why the 4 stars then? I give this book nearly top marks because if you can excavate the tips buried in the exercises this book contains you will find that not only do they really work, but that they make the way most manuals show you how to work seem at best clumsy. You will initially feel like you’re being wholly patronized, but pretty soon the results speak for themselves.
If you don’t really care why things work, just that they do, this won’t be a problem. This book will take you to the next level of Elements performance, and even make you realise that in all but the most extreme cases you really don’t need full Photoshop, but the journey could have been much more pleasant.
Report abuse. This book was what I was looking for. It helps you learn how to use photoshop elements to post process your photograhs. Also how to enhance them and merge them. It needs familiarty with PSE 9. It is aimed at the intermediate or advanced user of PSE 9. It does help you unleash PSE 9 and learn many tricks to improve your photography. Loads of useful tips and tricks in the book, I’ve not downloaded anything yet, the book is worth the money alone. Very useful, the video’s included in the book are well chosen and covers most of the thinks you will do in PSE.
Would recommend this for someone with already some basic knowledge. Last points first-book seems to only deal with PSE up to and including version 7. Secondly, all displays in the book are for a MAC Computer-and consequently are not easy to use to set up the free download, more about which below!
I had a big problem with the free-but seemingly essential download- which gives access to support images and movies. It did not ask during installation which photo programme it should use as default. My download decided to use a very old and long forgotten version of “Paintshop Pro ” 5!
After un-installing the offending “Paintshop Pro”, the book’s download, and rebooting I found I could not download the free download again. I have spent 6 hours trying to get the thing to work and have now given up. I probably will get some benefit from the book, hence the 2 stars but I will always feel I have missed out.
