Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. I use the sort by Date Modified a lot, but this is absolutely useless for folders as it always defaults to when the folder itself was created, not when new files are added to said folder.

I need a way to sort all my folders by their most recently added files. Is there a way to do this on windows? Now, if a file is added to a folder, Date last saved becomes the date the file was added. The limitation is that removing the new file does not set the date back — this column behaves more like Date last modified does for files, but for folders, instead.

To do so, point at the separator between the Name and Date modified columns. Please see attached screenshot, I am not seeing a ‘date modified ‘ option in explorer. I am not seeing how file explorer will show the files which were downloaded separately on Friday and saturday?

Well, you were not explicit about being in music folders, which have different display defaults. As you can see from your own screen shot, there is no actual data in “date received” and, thus, you can’t sort on it. Simply move you mouse anywhere in the title row and right click.

You will be presented with the columns that you can choose to display in relation to those files. Uncheck “date received” and check “date modified. Media libraries get their own defaults which are quite different than if you open File Explorer and choose to explore your C: drive, for instance. I have yet to see a File Explorer default for the header row on “normal” file folders be anything other than: Name, Date Modified, Type, Size.

If yours is showing something other than the previously mentioned four fields for a typical read: not media files folder on your system then someone customized it. Windows detects what kind of files you have in the folder and automatically “optimizes” the folder to suit.

If you change the folder to “General Items” you will see the default columns. Yes, and you see blue checkboxes, checked, next to each and every column that’s shown in your header row with the exception of “Name”, which must be shown.
